  • 2012-a political satire (spoiler warning!)

Another movie about the end of the world. Despite knowing that the plot will be quite predictable (world destruction but hero survived and managed to save their love one), I watched it anyway because I wanted to see the special effects. Since the start of the movie, I managed to predict accurately about who will die and who will survive. I'm also amused when the movie seems to borrow a bit from the story of Noah's Ark (bahtera Nabi Nuh) by showing how these people escaped by using arc and the fact that the name of the protagonist's son is Noah. There even a scene where the carried animal into the arc. However, what make the movie delightful is the fact that it is actually a political satire.

The movie showed the selfish side of politician and those who held the power and money. The disaster was predicted by the scientist two years earlier and they decided to build the arc. Instead of informing the public, they keep it a secret and started selling places for the arc to those with power. I noticed that when the president of U.S. gathered the leaders of other countries, those present are President of Italy (headquarters of Church), Russia, German, Japan, China and U.K.(big power of the world). When Adrian asked how the people are selected to enter the Arc, Carl said 'they were chosen according to the result of genetic test, the one believe to have the most potential to produce next generation'. Adrian answered, 'you mean money?' and Carl said 'without money, there is no science to build the arc.' I remember how Adrian yelled angrily saying that one room in the arc could fit ten people instead of just one. Believe it or not, Malaysia is the first country to sink during the disaster. While they were showing the map simulation, I quickly recognize our country. Another symbol to show how small country will be scarified by the bigger power. We can also see the selfish side of the politician when they did not go to save the one person who is responsible in discovering the disaster and allow them to make the preparation of the arc possible. The director also make a direct sarcasm towards Arnold Schwarzenegger. When Jackson called Kate in California asking her to leave the place, she answered that the Governor said nothing is wrong. Jackson yelled 'That guy is an actor, he's reading a script!'. Boy, that part sure make me laugh out loud.

I do believe the director try to soften thing down by showing how at the last minute the President of U.S. and President of Italy decided to stay with their people due to guilt and died. Another scene is when the leaders changed their mind and allow the people to enter the arc (just after riot occur and many people died, and Adrian plead to them). Well if they really care, they should had warned the people earlier, when the disaster was first predicted. But did they do that? No! If they had done that, more people could had been save. In real life, that scene would probably never happen but it's a movie so, anything is possible.I have never like politic. It is just too dirty. There is no such thing as clean politic. Corruption occur in every country, the only difference is the degree of the problem (by the way our country is in the 56th place in 2009 Corruption ranking). Most politician only know how to talk, give promises but never fulfill it. Its really rare to find a politician who care for their people. So I find this movie delightful, for it make fun of the selfish politicians.

  • Saying goodbye

It's hard to believe that five years had passed. When we were having fun, we tend not to notice how fast time passes by. Everything will now become beautiful memories. The small road I use to go to the faculty, the locker where I put my bag before I entered the library and most of all the time I spend with my friends. All those will become memories. Today is the last day that we are together. After that, who knows where and who will become. Each of us has different path to take. I always hated saying goodbye because to me it is such as sad thing to do. Everybody was hugging each other and saying good luck. I tried my best not to cry but in vain. I can no longer hold my tears when my friends started crying. It was like a domino effect. One person started crying and everybody else follow. As some of us were crying, a few were making jokes. Zahid suddenly started singing Hari Raya song which make us laugh. At that moment, all of us were crying and laughing at the same time. We'll be seeing each other again for our convocation, and I know that some of us will probably start crying again. I suppose it was a beautiful goodbye and I know that our friendship will never end

  • Raya report

This year is probably the last year for me to get duit raya. Despite that, I think this year is the best raya ever because i get to meet some of my classmate from primary and secondary school. After so many years, it was fun to meet them again. Time sure fly quickly. It seems like only yesterday all of us were playing at school. Well we didn't change very much. Despite everything that we went through we still managed to retain some of our childhood traits. We spent our time talking nonstop. It was as if, we're trying to catch up with the time we haven't seen each other. Our topic is of course bout our school days. Somehow those good old days just flashes through our mind. Husna still the same, tak habih2 dengan loyar buruk dia. Azlina as witty as ever. Sarah is a bit more talkative now, she used to be a bit quiet in school. Hafizatun is still sweet, Maznah is still soft-spoken and Serene is still well Serene All of them are doing well. All of them are continuing their Master. I'm a bit left behind but I be joining them soon.

One thing never change, the relatives from my mom's side. All of my cousins are either enganged or married and since I'm the eldest in the family, they will ask the same question. "Bila nak kahwin?" So cliche', not one of them think about asking what I'm going to do after I graduated despite knowing this year is my final year as a student. It can't be help, most of them are quite conservative. I always find it difficult to talk to most of my cousins especially the girls because our way of thinking is so different. My taste and interest are different from them. Their conversation is usually about politics, malay love novel, malay drama or boys. Me? I hate politics, i didn't read malay novel, i hardly ever watch malay drama. So I spend more time listening than joining the conversation. I was known as the 'quiet one' among the girls. As for the boys, I can talk to them since most of them like anime. :)

Ok, that's all folk! I be busy next weeks. Tons of assignments are waiting for me. urgh! really hope I can manage them well. See you all in the next entry

  • Poem for 'Women in Literature' class

    Title: Human's heart

    Happily Ever After,
    Everlasting true love,
    Till death do us part,
    Those are just fool's dream,
    Human's heart is unpredictable,
    Love can be found easily,
    Love can be erased easily.

Falling in love is not difficult,
    But preserving it is difficult,
    For human never feel satisfied,
    They always yearn for more,
    That is human nature,
Only the lucky ones find true love,
    For human's heart is unpredictable.

  • Pointless debate.

I was born in a Malay-speaking family but much of what I do is in English. My family sent me to a convent school where majority of the students were Chinese and other races. I begin to speak in a mixture of English and Bahasa Melayu. My school has successfully cultivate the love for books among the students. Students crowded in the library during recess time and after school to borrow books. At that time, the students were crazy about Famous Five, Sweet Valley Twins and Ghostbumps series. Sweet Valley Twins was especially famous among my classmates and they will gasp in horror if anyone stated that they did not read the series. In a way, it had become a popular culture in my school. Growing up in a book-loving environment, I developed my love for English literature and that love lead me to the decision of taking B.e.D(Hons) TESL. I never think that it is a crime to love another language because I have never really turn my back from my mother tongue. I still use Bahasa Melayu with my family. After 23 years old of living in a world where English and Bahasa Melayu had become common to my ears, suddenly the politicians are raising issues on the use of language in schools. All these talk about pro-Bahasa and pro-English is missing the point. We should be bilingual. What is wrong with being fluent in more than one language? After all, those who were able to converse more than one language had better chances of securing a job. Learning and using a new language does not mean we will totally forget our mother tongue thus lose our identity. So let's move the debate on to much more important things concerning running a country.
